PA++++ on sunscreen label indicates the level of protection against UVA rays (the rays that penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature aging, hyperpigmentation and increasing the risk of skin cancer).

The PA system is based on the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method, which measures how much longer your skin is protected from UVA exposure compared to no sunscreen.
.
Here's what each "+" means in the PA rating:
.
PA+ [PPD 2-4] : Some UVA protection
EXP. Indoor activities without direct sun exposure
.
PA++ [PPD 6-8] : Moderate UVA protection
EXP. Indoor activities with some sun exposure like office workers who need to travel from home
.
PA+++ [PPD 8-16] : High UVA protection
EXP. Outdoor activities like traveling
.
PA++++ [PPD > 16] : Very high UVA protection
EXP. Outdoor active activities like running, swimming, etc.

Currently, PA++++ is the highest level available and provides strong protection against UVA rays.

However, more '+' do not offer longer UVA protection. Every sunscreen is recommended to reapply every 2 hours for effective protection.

SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays.

SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

Higher SPF provides more protection, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UVB rays. Additionally, SPF doesn’t measure protection against UVA rays, which can also harm the skin, so it's necessary to look at 'PA rating' on sunscreens' label to cover both UVA and UVB protection.

Also, higher SPF does not offer longer protection. Regardless of SPF level, sunscreen should be reapplied approximately every two hours (or sooner if swimming or sweating) because its effectiveness diminishes over time.
